MDWriter is a simple iPhone text editor built around Markdown. Switch between the editor and a fully rendered preview with a single tap. Files are stored in iCloud and sync automatically across your devices. Changes save one second after you stop typing — no save button needed. Premium removes ads and gives you unlimited files.
A single button at the bottom of the screen switches between the Markdown text editor and a fully rendered preview. Standard Markdown elements — headings, lists, code blocks, bold, italic, links — render correctly in the preview. Images referenced by URL display inline.
Files are saved as .md files in iCloud Documents and sync automatically across all devices signed in with the same Apple ID. Start writing on iPhone and continue on iPad or Mac without any manual transfer step.
An autosave timer fires one second after each edit. The app also saves when it moves to the background or becomes inactive, so there is no risk of losing work when you switch apps or lock the screen. No save button to remember.
The free plan supports up to five files. A monthly Premium subscription removes all ads and lifts the file limit entirely. Purchase restoration is supported — subscribe once and your Premium status follows your Apple ID across devices.
The editor is a straightforward TextEditor with no formatting toolbar cluttering the screen. Type Markdown syntax directly and the preview handles the rendering. A Close button above the keyboard dismisses it quickly when you want to scroll or switch to preview. File names can be edited directly in the file list — characters that are not allowed in filenames are replaced with underscores automatically. Duplicate file names are caught with an inline error before the file is created.
The preview is powered by the MarkdownUI library, which renders headings, lists, code blocks, blockquotes, bold and italic text, links, and inline images. Switch to preview to check formatting while you write and switch back to the editor to make corrections — both modes are one tap away from the same screen.
Tap the list icon in the top-left corner to open the file browser. The + button at the bottom-right opens a dialog for naming and creating a new file. Tap any file to open it. Swipe left to delete. To rename a file, tap its row in edit mode, type the new name, and confirm — the underlying .md file is renamed immediately and iCloud reflects the change automatically.
The first time you open MDWriter, a sample Markdown reference document is created automatically and opened for you — in English or Japanese based on your device language. It covers common Markdown syntax so you have a working reference from the start. The last file you had open is restored automatically on every subsequent launch.
Tap the list icon in the top-left corner to open the file browser. Tap + to create a new document — enter a name and tap Create. Or tap any existing file to open it. On first launch, a sample document opens automatically.
Type your content using standard Markdown syntax. The editor disables autocorrect and autocapitalization so you can type code and syntax characters cleanly. Tap Close above the keyboard to dismiss it when you want to scroll.
Tap the Preview button at the bottom of the screen to see your Markdown rendered with headings, lists, and formatted text. Tap Editor to return and make changes. Both modes are always one tap away.
"I write blog posts and meeting notes in Markdown and this is the cleanest editor I've found for iPhone. The editor-to-preview toggle is smooth, autosave means I never lose anything, and iCloud sync lets me continue on my iPad without doing anything. Simple and reliable."
"No unnecessary features, no complicated toolbar — just a text editor and a preview button. Renaming files directly in the list is convenient. Subscribed to Premium to get rid of the ads and it's been a much cleaner experience."
"The sample document that opens on first launch is a nice touch — it doubles as a quick Markdown reference while you're getting started. The preview renders headings and lists exactly as expected. Straightforward app that does what it says."
