Each message is written as a JSON file to iCloud Drive, addressed specifically to the recipient's ID. The file is automatically removed after it's received, and a scheduled cleanup removes any files older than seven days. iCloud Key-Value Store change detection triggers background fetch tasks whenever a new message is waiting. The app runs up to three retry fetches after a notification arrives to make sure the message comes through. When the app is active, an in-app sound plays; when it's in the background, a push notification and badge appear.
